Facebook: what is it all about?

After almost a week on Facebook  i still have to figure out what is this all about.
Maybe I am retarded, but I I really do not get it.
Facebook have found friends of mine by checking my address book, plus some people I don't remember who the hell they are.
(this make me think it's a good idea to periodically make some clean in your address book).
Beside that  since I've joined  i have been literally flooded by  apps installation requests.
99% of that are pure crap, but you have no other way to figure it out than installing the application and check it.

Here are some horrors:

Will you have cute babies? 
Hell no!  I'm 47  and do not want kids!

Friend for sale/Pets for sale/Hottie for sale 
Now  am I on  social media, or just the slave market?  Why should i buy a friend and pat him/her on the head?

Compare hotness/cute or not/are you sexy etc. 
I've been rated hot 19 times in a week. well thank you, but  my profile says I'm taken and and  pretty much out of competition by choice.  Some are  just hysterical: you will be asked if a person is hot or not and they do not have a picture on the profile. How hot is a question mark?

Collectibles.
So far I'm collecting hearts, hatching pets, inspirational gift, Disney fantasies, friend hugz?  and stickerz. Guess what? I hate collectibles!
Zombies, vampires, trolls, various monsters you can feed with your friends. Man what kind of friend do I have?  Sorry  I just refused to install those.

Adopt a pet (you can even adopt a little dino): 
Ok , I have 12 cats in real life, should I adopt a virtual puppy as well  or maybe an ape?

Last but not least:: I imported RSS from my blogs, so everyone can see my updates.  Did not have a single refer from facebook, and  I have only few posts in my facebook board.

Can someone explain me what kind of social is this?
